Dear teachers and families of blind or low vision students,
This year we, at ABLE, are very excited to give away three free braille books, just in time for the holiday season.
The first book, The Wonders of Wisconsin, was given out at Braille Games. If you missed Braille Games, you can get a feel for what was experienced at the Milwaukee Public Museum by getting this book for your students. The book describes the Wonders of Wisconsin and has amazing tactile graphics including animals, different types of leaves and items used in the early 1900’s.
Also Julie Hapeman found two new books for ABLE to produce featuring young, blind protagonists. The Adventures of Marshmallow and Peter, is written by a blind second-grader. The book explains the special relationship between Peter and his white cane (named Marshmallow), which is so important in giving Peter independence and helping him participate in activities like hiking, karate, piano lessons, and soccer camp. The second book, My Three Best Friends and Me, Zulay features a blind first grader whose diverse group of friends cheer her on when she achieves her goal of running in a race.
Marshmallow and My Three Friends are both dual print and braille books.
Thank you to the Reimagination grant given by PricewaterhouseCoopers for funding The Wonders of Wisconsin to be available throughout all of Wisconsin.
Thank you to the Forest County Potawatomi Foundation for funding The Adventures of Marshmallow and Peter, and My Three Best Friends and Me, Zulay.
